Enabling remote management of a Hyper-V server requires performing a fairly complicated set of steps related to WMI Access, DCOM permissions, firewall exceptions, and Authorization Manager access. Fortunately, you can download a utility at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=2338 that enables you to set up a user with the appropriate permissions for remote management on the Hyper-V server and make other necessary configuration changes on the server and client. Note that this utility makes the specified user an administrator of Hyper-V.

If you want to manage Hyper-V using PowerShell, there is no native Hyper-V PowerShell support in Windows Server 2008 R2. The solution is to use the PowerShell cmdlets that are part of System Center Virtual Machine Manager; alternately, there is also an excellent free PowerShell cmdlet library available at http://pshyperv.codeplex.com/releases/view/38769 that works with PowerShell v2.

Hyper-V Server Settings

Once you understand the basic types of resource that can be assigned to a virtual machine, it’s important to understand the configuration options possible on the Hyper-V server itself. As I have already discussed, Hyper-V is just a role that is enabled on a Windows Server 2008 R2 installation, which needs to be Enterprise Edition or above if clustering will be used to enable Hyper-V’s high-availability capabilities. In addition, the Server Core installation mode of Windows Server should be used, provided that the organization is familiar with installing, configuring, and managing a Server Core Windows installation.

All the production problems I have seen for Hyper-V have been caused by firmware or driver updates that were not properly tested before being implemented in production.
